How IALP committees operate.

1. What financial support can committee chairs request for general purposes?

IALP cannot fund general committee activity. It has been found that committees can operate effectively without such by having virtual meetings or meeting at conferences at which they are already attending. It is recognized and appreciated that members of committees undertake a great deal of personal activity to support the mission and vision of the organization.

2. What financial support can and IALP committees seek from IALP?

All committees can apply for financial support from the IALP Board for a particular activity/project e.g. Composium which is in line with the organization’s mission and vision. Finances of the organization are very tight and priorities have to be made.

3. Can committees use the financial support to help committee chairs or members to travel for organizing or attending a committee meeting?

IALP does not fund any travel or other expenses for committee chairs or committee members. We suggest that committees use the internet or lower cost mechanisms in conjunction with local committee/university/affiliate society/convention bureaus/persons. Funds generated by committee-sponsored events can be used to cover lodging and/or food expenses. Expenditure receipts must be included in the committee’s financial report to the Executive Committee of a committee-sponsored event.

4. How many members can I have in my committee?

Committees can have up to 12 members and no more than 2 persons from the same country. All members can serve for only two (2) consecutive, three-year terms. In exceptional situations, where there is no other person available to continue the work, a member can be renewed for one additional term. This process facilitates the involvement of the greatest number of members. Members who have served for two (2) terms can be asked to become committee consultants particularly if involved in taking forward a specific project.

5. Can an individual member serve on more than one committee?

A member can serve on only one committee at any one time. However, they can also act as a consultant on another committee. This process facilitates the involvement of the greatest number of members.

6. Can a committee have a co-chair or vice chair?

A committee should have a Deputy or Vice Chair to assist with the work of the committee. The vice-chair reinforces effective communication with the committee and the IALP office if the committee chair is not available and there is time-sensitive work/communication that needs to be done.

7. Are Committee Chairs expected to attend Board meetings?

Committee Chairs are welcome to attend Board meetings as observers as is any individual member of IALP. If the committee Chair wishes, they can present their annual report to the Board meeting themselves. Otherwise the President-elect will present the annual reports of the committees to Board members.

8. To whom do I have to ask for information about my committee when in doubt?

Please contact the President-elect of IALP who has particular responsibility for communications between the committees and the Board. Please contact the Treasurer of IALP for any questions regarding finances.

9. When are other reports of committee activities due?
